Get to Know a Garden City Member: Johnie Thompson Jr.
Hi, my name is Johnie Thompson Jr. I was born in San Francisco California at St. Luke Hospital and I weighed in at 3lbs 13oz. But I call San Jose my home because I've been here since the age of nine. When I first came to San Jose in 1962 it was nothing except cherry, walnut, apricot, pear, and other trees here. So the main industry was the Canneries. Now it's High Tech. I have seen a lot of changes in this Valley. I consider myself a native of California. I was educated at Anne Darling Elementary, Roosevelt Jr. High, San Jose High, San Jose State, and Faith Theological Seminary in Tacoma, Washington. I have a 22-year-old son Ruhsaan whom I am so very proud of pursuing his career in Atlanta.
My favorite spot is the top of Mount Hamilton at the Lick Observatory, it is a beautiful place. And further down the hill is the Grandview Restaurant which has a gorgeous view of the city. My favorite dish is the Fillet Mignon. In my spare time, I like golfing and spending time outdoors. I'm a huge fan of the 49ers and the Warriors.
Our Life Group has recently ended in June but it was a great ride while it lasted. I am ever so grateful to our leader Tom Kelly and the rest of the group. The highlight was the last group meeting where we discussed openly the topic of racism in the United States. I joined the group while we were still having church at the Winchester location.
In light of the Shelter In Place, I have missed our gathering and I'm praying for day we can resume regular worship. I miss Pastor Justin's preaching. With the Church Retreat canceled this year I won't get a chance to meet some of you that I have not met yet, If you see me around, grab a hold of me and let's get acquainted. Let's all be encouraged and stay safe.
I also love to preach the gospel. I serve as the interim pastor of the Ocean View Bible Fellowship Church of Daly City. But every pastor needs a pastor and a church home. I'm so glad the Lord directed me to Garden City.
