Get to Know a Garden City Member: The Catheys

Hey there! We’re the Catheys: Kevin, Leslie, and Andrew

We’re from the little town of Wheaton outside Chicago. After failing to make the sports teams in high school, Kevin joined Student Council and Speech Team, where he eventually met Leslie during his senior year and her sophomore year. Kevin attended the University of Illinois where he did his first internship at Apple that has turned into 12 years working on the same software engineering team. Leslie attended Wheaton College and joined Kevin in the Bay Area after we got married and concluded six years of long-distance dating. Praise God for His sustaining grace!

We were blessed to join Garden City at it’s beginning, and it’s been awesome to see God’s faithfulness these past eight years. While you can often find us serving in kid’s ministry or running sound, we love leading our life group. We’ve been studying God’s heart for the world and our role as patrons and proclaimers of His Gospel.

Three years ago, we had the privilege of adopting our son Andrew from South Korea. He was just 21 months old, babbling in Korean. But now he is a full-blown almost-5-year-old who loves trains and dinosaurs and eats octopus-like most people eat chips. We love adoption because God loves adoption. It has been His plan from the very beginning and brings Him great joy (Eph 1:5). We are so thankful for Andrew and the joy he brings to our lives and so many others.

Our favorite spot in the world is Yosemite. We love hiking, backpacking, or cozying up in a warm cabin, drinking coffee while watching the sunrise over El Capitan. Our other absolutely favorite spot to be is in our home. And in between... we like to eat: Super Duper burgers, Verve Coffee, Asadero, or Korean barbecue.

During the shelter-in-place, we’ve really missed having people in our home. We love to share meals with our church family, neighbors, and friends. But in the midst of that hole, we’ve been thankful to keep up most of our rhythms: walks through Santa Clara University, pizza movie night, family wrestling matches and pillow fights (ok maybe that’s just Andrew and Kevin), and staying connected with people we love around the globe. We are truly blessed and thank the Lord for this every day.

If there’s one truth we want you to walk away with it’s that we have a BIG God who’s inviting us to join in His mission. It’s the most exciting, larger-than-life adventure you can ever be part of. And we love getting to be part of it with you all.

When life finds its way to a new normal, we’d love to have you over for homemade pizza, good conversation, and maybe even a pillow fight.

Until then,

Kevin, Leslie, and Andrew
