The Colburns!
We (John and Kerry) both grew up in Mountain View and went to the same elementary, middle, and high school. We always knew of each other but didn’t start dating until after college (Cal Poly for John and UCSB for Kerry). We did marching band and jazz band together at Mountain View High School and even did a duet in jazz band with John on the alto sax and Kerry on the trumpet.
We started dating after we were both invited to a mutual friend’s graduation from Westmont college and sat next to one another. We both enjoyed each others’ company, but Kerry already had plans to teach English in Spain for a year and John had plans to go to Colorado for a year to help his aunt and uncle build their ranch home.
A year later when we were both back in town, one day Kerry was on a run. Suddenly she heard a voice calling to her from a car, saying, “Kerry Quistad”! It was John. Kerry almost didn’t recognize him because he had long curly hair. John asked for Kerry’s number. Kerry didn’t think he’d actually call, but he did, and the rest is history. God was working in so many of the details, but no space here to share it all.
A few months later, Kerry would cut John’s long hair into a beautiful mullet for his Halloween costume, and then they would fall in love and get married. We thank God for bringing us together!
John enjoys mountain biking with his old high school buddies when he has kid-free time. When Kerry has kid-free time she enjoys going to movies by herself. She orders a medium popcorn with butter, raisinettes, and sometimes a red Icee. While Kerry’s at the movies, John often likes to play ‘Go in the Room and Get Scared’ with the girls, which consists of them making an obstacle course in the living room that ends in their bedroom. John then hides in their room and jumps out and scares them after they complete the obstacle course. They love it.
As a family, we love exploring our local county parks, going to Santa Cruz, and taking the girls to Deer Hollow Farm. When John and Kerry can get out for a date they enjoy hiking and eating yummy food like Luna Mexican kitchen, Sweetgreen, or sushi.
We joined the Buzzards life group about a year ago and what a joy it has been. We love getting into God’s word and always look forward to our time there. Our girls love to slide on their beautiful, wooden, slippery floors and to play with the Buzzard boys’ old Legos too.
We got involved at Garden City through an invite from the Cheneys (Hi Cheneys- we love you), and over time God made it clear that this is where He wanted us. We are grateful to be a part of this community and look forward to getting to know everyone more!
